Sudan: Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper

Sudan has had one of the highest growth rates amongst Sub-Saharan African countries anda rapidly rising per capita income, with per capita GDP of US$1,500. Nonetheless, the country'shuman development outcomes remain weak. Sudan ranks 154 out of 169 countries in UNDP's 2010Human Development Index, especially relative to the fact that income per capita GDP exceeded$1,500 or roughly 25 percent higher than the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) average. In 2009, Sudan wasthe third largest producer of crude oil in SSA, behind Nigeria and Angola, although Sudan'sproduction was only about 30 percent of Angola's. Despite the rising per capita income, theincidence of poverty is high, with 46.5 percent of the population is below the poverty line. There isalso significant variation in the incidence of poverty between urban and rural areas as well asbetween states in the Federation. The incidence of poverty in Khartoum state is 26.0 percent and69.4 percent in North Darfur.
